Our Brilliant Baking!

Today we had the privilege of having a master baker in our school, in the form of Mairéad Sheridan. Mairéad has been teaching baking and cookery in Cavan VEC for several years now and we were delighted that she came to help us out. Thank you very much for your help today.
We had great fun weighing the ingredients, mixing them, pouring them, baking them, decorating them and eating the finished result!
We all brought home an extra piece of sponge cake for our family to taste. We hope you liked it.
Here are some photos of us baking.

Happy Ladybugs

We made some pencil holders out of clay today.
First we got used to the clay by banging, rolling and pinching it. Then we made a big ball and a small ball. We pushed the big ball into the table to get a flat bottom on it. Next we got some water and used a crosshatch design to try to help the head stick firmly onto the body. At this stage we drew in our lovely happy faces, and put the patterns on their backs.
We left our happy ladybugs by the radiator and we hope that they will be dry by next week so we can paint them.
As a class we decided that the world needed a bit of cheering up, so they all have really happy faces!
We hope you like them.

UPDATE:  We finished our lady bugs today. We painted them a different colour for each group.
We think they look seriously cool.... :)

Swimming

We had great excitement last Friday as we started our first swimming lesson. We will be going to Cavan Leisure Complex every Friday morning until the end of this term. All children are asked to bring their swimming costume, swimming hat, a towel and their swimming money that morning. We will be leaving at 9am sharp, so please don't be late!

Our Hallowe'en Pumpkin

We each designed what our own pumpkin should look like. Then we examined each others' designs and saw some bits that we had common. We picked out our two favourite types of eyes, our two favourite noses and our two favourite mouths. We then voted as to what our pumpkin should look like. Mr. Walsh was the only adult, so he had to cut out the different shapes. The photos show the process.

Our Spooky Halloween Dance

We are currently perfecting the
"dead zombie" walk for our take Michael Jackson's Thriller dance.

We send a huge thank you to Mary the school's residential dance instructor!

Below is a link to the very scary original Michael Jackson Thriller video.

This is not suitable for very young people, or for those prone to zombie related illnesses! :)

Happy Halloween everyone!

Our Senses

For next while we are going to be examining words we can use to describe our senses.

For this month we are focusing on verbs we can use instead of "to see".

So far we have only come up with 7 words.

If you can think of any other words that would be suitable, please write them into the comments and we will add them to our brainstorm.

Thanks for your help!

Well done Donegal

There were lots of sad faces in Second Class after the All Ireland Final this weekend. Unfortunately Mayo lost to a better Donegal team. We hope that Mayo (or Cavan) can go a step better and win the Sam Maguire Cup next year!
In the meantime we send our congratulations go to Donegal for playing some fantastic football this year.

Up Mayo!!!

Mr. Walsh and his Second class will be cheering for Mayo this Sunday as they play against Donegal in the All Ireland Final in Croke Park.

Here is a link to the brilliant Sawdoctors song The Green and Red of Mayo which we have been singing this week.

Maybe one of the us could show you the actions we made up to go along with the words.

Up Mayo!!!!!!

Our Timetable

Our timetable is finally starting to become clearer!
Up to the Halloween break, we will have tin whistle every Wednesday and PE (dance) every Thursday.
I would really appreciate it if everyone could bring their tin whistles and their notes to school on Wednesday, and wear their tracksuits on Thursday.
After Halloween things may change slightly, but advance notice will be given through our homework journals.

Welcome Mr.Smith

A huge Room 7 welcome to Mr. Smith. He will be with us for the full month of September, teaching us lots of interesting things.
We are all super excited, and very lucky, to have two great teachers with us for the month.

Mini Economy

This year everyone in Room 7 will be working extra hard because we are running a Mini Economy in our class.
The Mini Economy is just like real life, except we deal with Fitzees instead of euros.

This is how it works:
Everyone has a job, and if we work really hard at it, we will get paid by cheque on a Friday.
Luckily, the Class Bank is open on a Friday!
In the bank we can lodge our cheques and save our Fitzees for another time; or we can take some savings out and buy something from the class shop.
But we must remember to keep some money out to pay the rent (for the tables and chairs)!!!!

We are all really excited to get the Mini Economy started up. It gives us another reason to get excited about Fridays.  :)
