A Class of Wonderful Young Scientists!

This week we have been looking at what's in our food.
We learned that carbohydrates are the fuel that we burn to keep our bodies going.
As Ms. Brady said "It's like the petrol that keeps the car moving."

We did a scientific test to see which one of these has the most carbohydrates, a cracker, bread, banana, pasta or water. We put a little of each food into a plastic glass.

Iodine is a liquid that shows us if carbohydrates are present in something.
We then used a pipette to put a little iodine on top of each food.
The more carbohydrates that are in the food, the quicker the iodine will go a dark black colour.

The bread went the darkest colour the quickest, meaning it had the most carbohydrates.
The banana was nearly as fast, meaning it had loads of carbohydrates but not quite as many as bread.
The pasta took a little while to go dark. We think it might have been quicker if we had cooked it first.
The cracker took the longest to go a black colour, meaning it had some carbohydrates but not a huge amount.
The water stayed the same reddish brown colour no matter how much iodine we added or how long it was left. We deduced that this means that water has no carbohydrates at all.
